&lt;p&gt;Our team recently attended LASER SHANGHAI, one of the largest photonics trade fairs in Asia, bringing together over 1,400 exhibitors and showcasing the latest innovations in lasers, optics, and photonics technologies. This event was a great opportunity to connect with industry leaders, discover cutting-edge applications, and explore the future of photonics and laser measurement.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;While in the region, we also took the opportunity to visit our team at our Japan office and spend time with our colleagues there.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It doesn’t take much. One small shift in beam quality or power level, and you may be left with dozens of faulty units before the problem even appears on your radar. In a production environment where quality and yield drive profitability, unnoticed laser drift can turn into a silent killer.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Let’s take a closer look at where this instability comes from—and how you can build systems that catch it before it causes damage.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The hidden instability of lasers&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At the heart of the issue lies a fundamental truth: lasers don’t stay the same forever.&lt;/p&gt;

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Following in the &lt;a href="https://www.nature.com/immersive/d41586-024-03745-z/index.html"&gt;footsteps of the recent advancements&lt;/a&gt; at the US National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL, several commercial fusion energy projects will be attempting to recreate the conditions found in the hot center of the sun using new, high-energy lasers. Each project has identified unique processes to be developed in order to implement fusion reactions in rapid succession.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Contrary to the devices utilizing magnetic confinement, such as tokamaks, which could result in a continuous fusion reaction, laser-driven devices are targeting a method called inertial confinement fusion that compresses the nuclear fuel to the point of fusion. Each operation completely burns the nuclear fuel, which is then replaced, after which the process is restarted. The goal is to do this ten times per second or more. NIF is currently able to support about 400 experiments per year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At this time, the two most promising methods of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) are direct drive and indirect drive.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the &lt;strong&gt;direct drive&lt;/strong&gt; method, the nuclear fuel is compressed using lasers to directly heat the fuel. Problems arise when the fuel has a less-than-perfect shape or position, as the reaction relies on internal shockwaves to initiate the ignition. Implosion symmetry is crucial to &lt;a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2412.18455"&gt;achieving fusion&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;strong&gt;indirect-drive&lt;/strong&gt; method uses lasers to heat a metal enclosure, which emits x-rays that in turn heat and compress the fuel. In addition to different problems posed by the shape and position of the enclosure and the fuel, the method also &lt;a href="https://pubs.aip.org/aip/pop/article/31/11/112708/3322685/Hybrid-direct-drive-with-a-two-sided-ultraviolet"&gt;suffers from lowered efficiency due to the change in wavelength&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A successful commercial fusion reactor must produce more energy than it uses. Additionally, the fuel pellet may be complicated to manufacture, and implosion symmetry may be difficult to achieve.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;{{Banner}}&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some projects are experimenting with a &lt;strong&gt;hybrid direct drive&lt;/strong&gt;, in which indirect drive is only used to initiate the compression, followed by several shots from UV lasers to achieve fusion. These designs may allow for simpler fuel pellet design and simpler reactor design: one design achieves symmetry in the initial stage, then uses asymmetric lasers to add energy to the symmetric implosion, thanks to the existing dense plasma absorbing energy uniformly.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;NIF uses 192 lasers arranged around the fuel pellet to achieve fusion. During laser generation and amplification, laser energy must be monitored so the expected energy can be delivered to the fuel within the necessary tolerances. As the laser pulse is transmitted from the generation area to the target area, energy must be monitored during this transport phase as well. Data must be monitored over time to ensure consistency between experiments, and &lt;a href="/"&gt;laser measurement instruments&lt;/a&gt; must be closely monitored to ensure the data can be trusted. &lt;h2&gt;PC-BEAMAGE update&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This month’s &lt;a href="/resources/download-center?DownloadCenterParamViewModel.DocumentTypes=0&amp;amp;DownloadCenterParamViewModel.Categories=8&amp;amp;DownloadCenterParamViewModel.IsUserFromChina=False"&gt;update to PC-Beamage&lt;/a&gt; includes performance improvements with our &lt;a href="/products/beamage-4m-ir"&gt;BEAMAGE-4M-IR beam profiler&lt;/a&gt; for infrared beams. This is the result of a large investment in research, especially for small and low-power beams. We are confident that BEAMAGE-4M-IR exceeds the measurement performance of all competing phosphor-based beam profilers that rely on a simple gamma correction-based response characterization. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to talk about your IR laser profiling challenges.&lt;img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="/remote.axd?https://genteceo.blob.core.windows.net/prod/c07bd52d/beamage-4m.png?quality=75&amp;amp;width=1920&amp;amp;upscale=false?width=289&amp;amp;height=224&amp;amp;mode=max" alt="BEAMAGE-4M-IR" width="289" height="224" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other updates to PC-Beamage include a correction to the Gaussian fit in certain situations, and a new command to read exposure time via the Named Pipes program interface for automation and program extension. There are also smaller fixes and consistency improvements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody"&gt;Phosphor-based beam profilers use a coating that absorbs infrared energy and re-emits it in the visible spectrum, which the beam profiler can see. This allows the accurate profiling of laser beams at infrared wavelengths without expensive scientific profilers such as InGaAs-based, that may be large or even require cooling. The drawback is the bandwidth of the camera is decreased. Our beam profiler is optimized for the most common IR wavelengths. The phosphor-based system is also less sensitive than a typical InGaAs-based sensor, however, this is in most cases not an issue for laser beam profilers.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
